Cambodian Poet Laureates?

With a little help from me, my amazing, wonderful, hilarious and talented Grade 4s came up with this poem as an exercise to understand rhyming words. One of my favourite teaching moments so far:

We are Grade 4,

At Sovann Komar.

Here is a poem,

To tell you who we are.

Heng is crazy,

Because his head aches.

He loves playing football,

Then he eats cakes.

Vannary likes Khmer,

But English is hard.

She loves seeing Susan,

And making her a card.

Davy likes to learn,

Especially English.

She loves eating noodles,

It’s her favourite dish.

Sasda likes to sing

“I will always love you”.

She loves all her friends,

And her teachers too.

Mony’s funny laugh,

Sounds like a horse.

He likes playing with toys,

And his friends of course.

Sak likes dinosaurs,

And he loves to draw.

Singing “Let it go”,

As he’s doing a jigsaw.

Bush loves to play,

With Sasda’s  hair.

He doesn’t like Khmer,

Sitting bored in his chair.

David loves wood apples,

Whatever they are.

He’s the oldest in the class,

Soon he’ll have a car.

Piseth is always happy,

Every single day.

He likes eating cookies.

Football, he loves to play.

Finally there’s Teacher Ruth,

She simply is the best.

Imparting all her knowledge,

Ready for our test.

We hoped you enjoyed

Our little rhyming ditty.

If we do say so ourselves,

It’s really rather witty.
